CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's soccer team has been very active in volunteer work since the end of the 1998 season. Team members raised money for the UNC Hospitals, aided a sports medicine research project at Duke University, volunteered at the Ronald McDonald house and hosted a youth clinic for Chapel Hill-area children in the last several months.
"We as a team want to give back to our community," says head coach Elmar Bolowich. "We want to be known as a team that is active in the community in helping children and those who aren't as fortunate as we are."
As a part of the Carolina Outreach Program, a group of Tar Heel players led by sophomore defender Michael Bucy organized the 1999 UNC Children*s Hospital Dance Marathon held Feb. 20-21 to raise money for the hospital.
"This event is all about the kids, and once you get to meet them, it becomes even more meaningful," says Bucy of the Dance Marathon. "We wanted to have a strong athletic presence while integrating the athletic population, the Greek population and the entire student body for this one cause."
Team members also volunteered their time to help research and testing of soccer shoes and cleat stud pressure at the Duke University Sports Medicine Laboratory. The team also cooked dinner for families at the Ronald McDonald House in Chapel Hill and organized the UNC Youth Soccer Day, which included a soccer clinic and autograph session for over 60 children from the Chapel Hill YMCA.
