On a day when North Carolina's pitching was not the dominating crew it usually is, the offensive line-up came through with a high powered attack that left Portland reeling. Once again, Carolina's pitching staff had a lot of room for error as Tar Heel batters continued to pour on the runs this season. The Heels scored 15 runs on 20 hits and two Pilot errors en route to their 15th consecutive win, continuing the best start in school history. Portland fell to 4-7 on the year and 1-2 in the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic. Carolina also garnered the #1 seed in the tournament's Blue Division and will play the four seed out of the Red Division on Thursday.
Carolina's offense was so well balanced that everyone in the starting lineup had at least one base hit. Ryan Mathews led the show with a three for four performance, while Tyrell Godwin went three for five with 4 RBI's. One other Heel, Clay Hooper, also had three hits on the day, including a towering home run over the left field wall. Other Tar Heels with multiple hits include Dan Moylan, Chris LaMarsh, Jarrett Shearin, Matt McCay, and Ryan Earey.
Ryan Snare started the game for Carolina but only made it through 2.2 innings while allowing four runs on four hits. Michael Horney then came in for Carolina and virtually closed the door on Portland to pick up his first win of the season. Horney gave up three unearned runs in 3.1 innings of solid work. Tar Heel relievers Jay Madeira and Derrick DePriest threw one inning each to close out the victory. Pilot starter Brendan Wood (0-2) took the loss for Portland.
Carolina will play Thursday at a time to be determined against either Fresno State or Penn. Mike Bynum (3-0) will take the mound for the Heels as they move into the second half of the tournament. This site will be updated as soon as today's final two games are completed and Thursday's games are set.
