Carolina baseball headed into Wednesday's game with Penn knowing that they were probably the much better team on the field. This did not lead to a Tar Heel letdown, however, as UNC put up six runs in the first inning and never looked back. Carolina Head Coach Mike Fox did everything he could to keep the game respectable by completely disrupting the heart of the Tar Heel order, but the runs just kept coming. Carolina dominated the Quakers in every imaginable aspect of the game. The Heels scored eighteen runs on four hits and seven Penn errors to move to 16-0 on the year and 4-0 in the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic. When Quaker pitchers did find the plate, the ball was driven somewhere in the outfield.
Lefty Mike Bynum (4-0) picked up the win for Carolina in a very strong outing that lasted seven innings. Freshman Joey Popovich came in and picked up two complete innings to close out the game. Several Tar Heels had multiple hits including Jarrett Shearin, Matt McCay, Tyrell Godwin, and Ryan Earey. Earey and Chris LaMarsh both homered for the Heels.
UNC will play again Thursday either against host team Fresno State at 7:00 or Seton Hall at 4:00 based on the outcome of Wednesday evening's game. This site will be updated as soon as a game time and opponent are set.
