Marcy Newton Wins Title at Fripp Island

FRIPP ISLAND, S.C. - University of North Carolina's Marcy Newton, a junior from High Point, N.C., captured the individual title of the Fripp Island Women's Intercollegiate last weekend. Another Tar Heel, freshman Heather Angell, was the runner-up.
Newton led throughout the tournament, posting rounds of 75-73-70 for a 218 total. Angell, from Winston-Salem, N.C., finished six strokes back in second place with a 224 total after posting rounds of 79-72-73. Vikki Tutt of Georgia State finished third with a 228 total while Tulane's Pam Buff placed fourth at 231 and teammate Christy Carter was fifth with a 233 total.
Southern Mississippi captured the team title defeating Tulane in a playoff as both teams finished 54 holes with a 939 total. Georgia State finished third with a 947 total while the Tar Heels finished fourth with a 956 total.
Carolina's other scores included a 246 total by Cuyler Buckles who carded rounds of 86-78-82 for a tie for 26th place and a 268 total by Beth Lever with rounds of 93-87-88 and 58th-place finish.
The 54-hole event was played at the Ocean Point Golf Links which features a par 72, 5,846-yard layout.
