UNC Laxers Fall to Delaware, 18-16

NEWARK, Del. - All-American John Grant, the nation's leading scorer entering the game, had four goals and seven assists for a career-high 11 points as No. 6 ranked University of Delaware built a big halftime lead and held on for an 18-16 men's lacrosse win over No. 15 North Carolina Sunday at Rullo Stadium.
The Blue Hens, coming off their first loss of the season Wednesday to No. 8 Georgetown, improved to 9-1 on the season despite being outshot 58-32. The 10-game start is the best in school history. The Tar Heels (6-7), playing their third game in five days, got five goals each from Matt Crofton and
Delaware, which got a team-high five goals from Jim Bruder and three from Dennis DeBusschere, struck early and often on its way to a 14-5 lead at halftime, outscoring the Tar Heels 6-1 in the second quarter alone. The Hens built that lead to 16-5 three minutes into the third quarter as Bruder scored two quick goals. But North Carolina failed to give in and almost rallied for the comeback.
Following Bruder's second goal, North Carolina scored the final five goals of the stanza to cut the lead to 16-10 heading into the final quarter. Crofton (three goals) and Bowman (two) accounted for all five scores during the stretch.
ruder's fifth goal of the game with 9:20 left to play put the Hens up 18-11, but back came the Tar Heels once again. North Carolina scored the final five goals of the game, including three by Bowman, to cut the lead to 18-16 with 28 seconds left.
Grant, who entered the game No. 1 in the nation with 61 points, upped his total to 72 as he scored a career-high 11 points, including a career-high tying seven assists. Kevin Lavey added two goals for Hens while Chase Martin contributed three goals to the UNC effort.
