DENVER - The 13th ranked University of North Carolina men's lacrosse team overcame a slow start against the University of Denver to claim a 7-4 victory and finish the team's first ever trip to Colorado with two victories.
Denver came out of the gates strong jumping to an early 2-0 lead in front of the 2,112 spectators who came to watch the Pioneers take on their first ranked opponent of the season. The Heels didn't strike until the beginning of the second quarter when senior Justin Bowman scored one off an assist from junior Matt Crofton. Crofton evened things up ten minutes later in the scoring the Heels' second goal.
Carolina entered the second half deadlocked at two with the Pioneers. Once again, Denver struck first to open the second half scoring at the 5:22 mark of the third quarter. The goal served as a wake-up call for the Carolina offense as the Heels rattled four straight goals to claim a 7-4 lead. Junior Chase Martin led the charge as he tallied one goal and two assists during the barrage of scoring. Sophomore Jeff Sonke extended his streak of scoring a goal in every Tar Heel game this season as he put one in at the 11:58 mark in the third.
The streak of Carolina goals proved to more than the Pioneers could handle as Denver never bounced back. The Pioneers did manage one final goal at 9:33 in the fourth to bring the final score to a low-scoring 7-4 total.
The win improves Carolina's record to 4-2 and gives the Heels a two game winning streak. The Pioneers continue to search for their first win of the season as their record dropped to 0-4 with the loss.
Carolina returns home to face defending national champion, Princeton this Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Fetzer Field. The game will be Carolina's first game of the season at Fetzer as the team has played all its previous home games at Navy Field. Princeton enters the game with an 0-2 record.
