Chapel Hill, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina football coaching staff held their annual high school coaches clinic over the weekend of March 19-21, offering instruction on coaching, practice and training technique to prep coaches from around the country. Five hundred fifty high school coaches attended the clinic, which began Thursday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. and ran through Carolina's practice Saturday afternoon. Attendees included coaches from nine states, including North Carolina, Virginia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and as far away as Wisconsin.
"We were very pleased with our clinic again this year," said Carolina head coach Carl Torbush. "We feel like it"s become one of the best clinics in the country. We had 550 high school coaches in attendance with nine states represented, which is outstanding. I remember 11 years ago, we had 75 coaches at our first clinic and now we"ve had 550 or more in each of the last four years. We"re really excited and I think it"ll continue to get better."
The clinic included Tar Heel practices on Friday and Saturday, a Fellowship of Christian Athletes luncheon on Friday afternoon and a pig picking held Friday evening at the Dean E. Smith Center on the UNC campus. Former Tar Heel player Clyde Christensen, now the tight ends coach for the NFL"s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, delivered the speech at the FCA luncheon.
Clinic lecturers included all members of Carolina"s coaching staff, as well as guest lecturers Larry Coker, assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at the University of Miami (Fla.), and Fred Pagac, defensive coordinator at Ohio State University. Also featured were the head coaches from each of the four N.C. high school state championship teams: Daryl Barnes of 4A Richmond County HS, Keith Wilkes of 3A Carver HS, Chris Norman of 2A Shelby HS and Joe Hutchins of 1A Starmount HS. Head Coach Johnny Roscoe of Lancaster (S.C.) HS delivered a speech on strategies for players taking the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).
Spring practice continues for the Tar Heels this week with practices on Tuesday (March 23), Wednesday (March 25) and Thursday (March 26). The Tar Heels" annual Blue-White scrimmage to conclude Spring Practice will be held on Saturday, Apr. 15. Carolina"s 1999 season opener is Sept. 4 versus Virginia in Kenan Stadium.
