GAINESVILLE, Fla.-The fifth-ranked University of Florida women's soccer team was intent on ending top-ranked North Carolina's 33-match winning streak on Sunday when the two powerhouses met at Percy Beard Stadium on the UF campus in Gainesville, Fla.
And Coach Becky Burleigh's team almost pulled off the feat.
But in the end, a sudden-death overtime goal by Carolina junior midfielder Laurie Schwoy 7:32 into the first overtime period lifted Carolina to a 2-1 victory over the Gators before a partisan Florida crowd of 5,222. It was Carolina's 34th win in a row.
It was Carolina's first overtime game since December 8, 1996 when the Tar Heels defeated Notre Dame 1-0 in overtime in the NCAA championship game at Santa Clara, Calif.
Carolina got on the scoreboard first against the Gators on Sunday afternoon as senior forward Cindy Parlow, the 1997 National Player of the Year, scored her fifth goal of the week at 57:49 mark. Senior midfielder Tiffany Roberts assisted on Parlow's goal. Parlow scored on a shot from the corner of the six-year box, directing it into the upper left corner of the net.
The Gators forced overtime when they scored with 4:01 left in regulation time. Reserve Melissa Pini scored the goal on an eight-year low shot with North Carolina goalkeeper Siri Mullinix out of the net. Sarah Yohe and Erin Baxter assisted on the goal.
Schwoy then knocked in the game-winner with 7:32 elapsed in the first overtime. She beat Florida goalkeeper Meredith Flaherty from 18 yards out in the center of the field, slotting the ball into the top shelf for the game-winner. Senior Lorrie Fair and freshman Anne Remy assisted on the goal. Ironically, Tar Heel head coach Anson Dorrance had just substituted Schwoy and Remy back into the game just 1:12 before the two combined to get the winning goal for the Tar Heels.
The victory boosted Carolina's record to 13-0 on the season, while the Gators lost their first match of the season and fell to 11-1. UNC now leads the all-time series against the Gators 5-0.
Carolina has now won 34 matches in a row since playing to a 2-2 tie with Notre Dame on September 19, 1997 at Notre Dame, Ind. in a match that was called in the 72nd minute because of lightning.
Carolina has now gone unbeaten in its last 58 matches, going 57-0-1 since losing to Notre Dame 2-1 in overtime on October 4, 1996 in Durham, N.C. The 58-match unbeaten streak is the third-longest unbeaten streak in North Carolina women's soccer history a 103-game streak from 1986 to 1990 and a 101-game streak from 1990 to 1994.
UNC (13-0) will continue play on Friday in the Saint Mary's College Fall Soccer Classic in Moraga, Calif. The Tar Heels will be going up against seventh-rated Portland at 4:00 p.m. P.D.T.
