DURHAM, N.C.-Georgia Tech starting pitcher Chuck Crowder did not allow a hit in 6.0 shutout innings of work as the Yellow Jackets defeated North Carolina, 15-4, in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament Wednesday at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
With the loss, the Tar Heels fell to 40-15 on the season. Carolina has tied its season high with three consecutive defeats and has lost six of its last nine games. Tech, which defeated UNC for the third time in five days after taking two of three in Chapel Hill in the final weekend of the regular season, improved to 38-18.
The 15 runs scored by Georgia Tech were the most given up by a Carolina team in its 94-game ACC Tournament history, topping the old high of 14 set by N.C. State in 1987. The 11-run margin of defeat and six errors committed by the Heels were also the highest in UNC's ACC Tournament history.
"I think you have to give hats off to Georgia Tech," Carolina head coach Mike Fox said after the game. "They played really outstanding. When you get behind early, it's always difficult. We tried to look at it in a positive way that we had a whole game left to play. We'll be ready to play tomorrow."
Crowder (10-5) picked up the win for the Yellow Jackets, shutting out Carolina on no hits through 6.0 innings before being replaced to start the seventh inning by reliever Kevin Cameron. UNC finished the game with four hits. Ryan Snare (6-4) took the loss for Carolina, lasting only 1.2 innings and allowing four unearned runs on five hits.
Georgia Tech scored four unearned runs in the top of the first. Mark Teixeira hit into what appeared to be an inning-ending, 6-4-3 double play but UNC catcher Dan Moylan was called for catcher's interference, opening the floodgates. Jason Basil hit an RBI double and Derik Goffena hit a two-run single in the inning.
The Yellow Jackets put five more runs on the board in the fourth on five hits. Goffena drove in a run with an infield single, Eric McQueen drove in two with a double to right over UNC rightfielder Jay Madeira's head and Stephen Donaghey drove in one with a single to right.
Tech added three insurance runs in the fifth for a commanding, 12-0 lead. Carolina scored four runs in the final three innings but could not get any closer.
Jarrett Shearin, Ryan Earey and Rob Miano all doubled for Carolina. Matt McCay picked up Carolina's fourth hit of the game. McQueen went 3-for-4 with two RBI for Tech, which had six hitters collect at least two hits.
Carolina will return to action Thursday at 10:00 a.m. against the loser of Wednesday afternoon's game between No. 1-seeded Florida State and No. 8-seeded Maryland.
