Danielle Borgman Named to Soccer America Freshman All-America Team

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman Danielle Borgman, who enjoyed a splendid rookie year for the University of North Carolina women's soccer team in 1998, was named Tuesday to Soccer America's All-Freshman Team for the 1998 campaign. Borgman was one of 11 players named to the team and the only North Carolina player to be named to the honor squad.
A freshman defender from Cincinnati, Ohio, Borgman started all 26 games for the Tar Heels in 1998 as Carolina went 25-1-0, winning the Atlantic Coast Conference championship and finishing as the runnerup in the NCAA Tournament. She scored three goals during the season while taking 13 shots and she added four assists for a total of 10 points.
The Carolina team's fastest player, Borgman, who had played striker all through high school and had never played defense prior to this season, was feted by Soccer America for her deadly tactics when pushed into the attack unit from her defensive position.
Other members of the All-Freshman Team were defender Keisha Bell of Florida, forward Danielle Korbmacher of Hartford, forward Mary-Frances Monroe of Connecticut, goalkeeper Emily Oleksiuk of Penn State, forward Katy Robertson of George Mason, defender Danielle Slaton of Santa Clara, defender Lindsay Smart of Portland, midfielder Emily Taggart of Wake Forest, forward Abby Wambach of Florida and midfielder Casey Zimny of Connecticut.
Monroe was named by Soccer America as it 1998 collegiate freshman player of the year.
