Chapel Hill, N.C. -- Eric McQueen's solo home run with one out in the top of the ninth inning gave Georgia Tech a 3-2 victory over North Carolina Sunday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium in the final game of the 1999 regular season for both teams. The Yellow Jackets took two of three games from the Tar Heels in the three-game weekend series and improved to 37-18, 12-12 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. UNC, which has lost five of its last eight games, falls to 40-14, 13-11.
With the win, Geogia Tech clinches the No. 5 seed in this week's ACC Tournament to be held May 18-23 in Durham, N.C. Carolina's seeding will be determined by the outcome of the Clemson-N.C. State game held late Sunday afternoon in Raleigh, N.C. An N.C. State victory would give Carolina the No. 3 seed and a Clemson win would give Carolina the No. 4 seed.
Andy Mitchell (3-0) pitched the final 3.0 innings in relief of starter Ben Sheeter to pick up the win for the Jackets. Mitchell allowed one hit and no runs. Derrick DePriest (6-5) took the loss for UNC, allowing McQueen's solo shot in the ninth.
Starting pitchers Sheeter and Mike Bynum both pitched well but got no-decisions. Bynum allowed two hits and two unearned runs in 6.1 innings while striking out seven for Carolina while Sheeter allowed two runs, one of which was earned, and four hits in 6.0 innings for Tech.
Carolina took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth when Jay Madeira walked, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a fielding error by Tech second baseman Richard Lewis. Tyrell Godwin hit a solo home run to rightfield with one out in the bottom of the sixth for a 2-0 UNC lead.
The Yellow Jackets tied the score at 2-2 with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the seventh. Mark Teixeira and Derik Goffena both reached on Tar Heel errors and scored on a bloop single to centerfield by pinch-hitter Stephen Donaghey.
Carolina will play its next game Wednesday in the first round of the ACC Tournament.
