CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Virginia scored two unassisted goals in the second half of a closely-fought game to defeat North Carolina, 2-0, on a hot Sunday afternoon at Fetzer Field. With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 6-0-2 this season, 2-0-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Carolina, which had won three games in a row, fell to 5-3, 0-2.
After a scoreless first half in which Virginia dominated the early minutes and the Tar Heels controlled play in the closing minutes, the Cavs scored 4:45 into the second period to take a 1-0 lead. On the game's first goal, Sam Franklin drilled a 25-yard shot into the top right of the net after a cross richocheted off a UNC defender.
Chris Albright scored the Cavs' second goal at the 58:49 mark when Carolina goalkeeper Michael Ueltschey was caught out of position and Albright had an uncontested shot on goal.
The game was fairly evenly matched throughout much of the action, with Virginia outshooting Carolina, 13-11, and having eight corner kicks to UNC's four.
The Tar Heels return to action next Sunday, Oct. 4 at Duke.
