CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The typical life of a student-athlete is full of practice and studying with time for little else. Someone forgot to tell that to Carolina men's soccer player Michael Bucy.
ucy, a defender who finished third on the team in scoring as a sophomore last season, is the overall coordinator of the 1999 UNC Children's Hospital Dance Marathon. The Marathon will take place in Carmichael Auditorium on Feb. 20-21 from noon to noon.
The Marathon, which will raise money for the UNC Children's Hospital, is a celebration of the participants' efforts to help the hospital and their newfound friendships with the children. The event will bring students from over 60 campus groups together for one unifying cause, and Carolina athletes will play a key role.
"We're working strongly through Carolina Outreach and with a couple of teams in particular to raise money," says Bucy, an alumnus of Raleigh Sanderson High School. "At the event we're going to have a pep rally where the cheerleaders and the dance team are going to perform. We hope to have a strong athletic presence, but we want to integrate the athletic population, the Greek population and the entire student body for this one cause."
Prior to the Marathon, those participating will seek donations from friends, family and the rest of the community to support their 24 hours of dancing.
In addition to dancing, participants will also get spend time with the kids they are helping throughout the Marathon. This allows participants the chance to see where their efforts are going.
"This event is all about the kids, and once you get to meet them, it becomes even more meaningful," says Bucy.
esides helping out a good cause, participants will also have a good time. The event will feature free food and entertainment, including performances by bands such as Blue Dogs and Weekend Excursion. All three agreed to play at reduced cost. Campus groups such as the Clef Hangers, the Loreleis and Hip Hop Nation will also perform.
This event combines food, fun and fellowship and will feature something for everyone. It is not too late to lend a helping hand to these wonderful children.
