Women's Golf Fourth after Round One of Lady Gamecock Classic

BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. - The 19th-ranked North Carolina's women's golf team is in 4th place, 21 strokes behind tournament-leading Duke after the first round of the Lady Gamecock Classic. The Tar Heels carded a 308 in Friday's first round.
Carolina's Marcy Newton led the Tar Heels with a strong three-over-par round of 75 that put her in a tie for tenth place overall. Duke's Jenny Chuasiriporn, the 1998 U.S. Women's Open runner up, shot a women's course and tournament record six-under 66 to take the individual lead.
Carolina's Heather Angell tied for 13th place by shooting a four-over 76, while teammate Shelley McKevitt posted a 77 in the first round to tie for 22nd. Carolina's Cuyler Buckler tied for 42nd place with an eight-over 80.
This weekend's 54-hole event is being held at the home course of the South Carolina Gamecocks, the University Club, which features a par 72, 5,996-yard layout. Duke is the tournament's defending champion.
