Two North Carolina seniors have been named All-District selections in the 1999 GTE Academic All-America Team voting. Marie "Sam" Hermitte, a member of the crew team, and Colleen Lefferts, a softball player, both have been honored for their outstanding academic and athletic achievements and are candidates for All-America honors.
Hermitte, from Midland, N.C., was the coxswain for Carolina's varsity eight boat, which spent the 1999 season ranked in the top 20 nationally. She also was coxswain for the varsity four that won a bronze medal at the 1998 NCAA Championships. A co-captain of the team, she is a Morehead Scholar and carries a 3.795 grade point average. Very involved in service projects on campus and in Chapel Hill, she has spent summers working with relief programs in Ghana, vaccinating cats and dogs in Ecuador and interning with the Center for Urban Poverty. She is a double major in public policy analysis and African-American studies.
Lefferts, from West Islip, N.Y., started in right field for UNC, which finished the season 40-22 and set team single-season highs for hits, home runs, runs scored and stolen bases. A team co-captain, she batted .295 and registered a fielding percentage of 1.000. A sociology major with a minor in history, she carries a 3.64 grade point average and has earned Dean's List honors in every semester at Carolina.
