Carolina to Host Top of the Hill Men's Tennis Championships

CHAPEL HILL N.C.-- The University of North Carolina will host the Top of the Hill / ITA Region II Tennis Championships November 4-9, 1998. The tournament brings together the best men's tennis players from 45 schools in the South Atlantic region (Maryland-Georgia).
Play begins Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. with a singles and doubles qualifying tournament. Eight singles players and four doubles teams will earn berths in the main draw through qualifying. The main draw doubles competition begins Thursday afternoon with matches slated for 5 p.m. 6:30 and 8 p.m. Main draw singles action begins Friday morning at 8 a.m.
UNC's Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center is hosting the region championships for the seventh consecutive year. The 1998 tournament boasts five singles players and six doubles teams ranked among the nation's top 20 according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Rankings. Last year's winner, VCU's Daniel Andersson and 1996 champion Doug Root of Duke highlight this year's field.
Triangle area schools are well-represented in the tournament. NC State's Roberto Bracone and Eric Jackson (ranked 15th nationally) and Duke's Root and Jordan Wile (ranked 5th) are expected to be the top contenders for the doubles title.
North Carolina will compete in this year's tournament minus its top singles player, Tripp Phillips, who is recovering from shoulder surgery performed this summer. Freshman Bjorn Rencken and sophomore David Cheatwood (Fayetteville, N.C.) are expected to be the top Tar Heel threats in the tournament.
Both singles finalists and the winning doubles team will earn berths in the ITA National Indoor Championships held February 4-7, 1999, in Dallas, Texas. The National Indoor Championships represent the third leg of the collegiate tennis "Grand Slam" which culminates in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships in May.
