CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -University of North Carolina offensive lineman Jon Hall will remain suspended for the rest of the 1998 football season, Tar Heel head coach Carl Torbush announced today. Hall will not be allowed to practice or play in any games this fall. Hall, a fourth-year junior guard from Hagerstown, Md., pleaded no contest to simple misdemeanor assault on Friday, October 9, in Hillsborough (N.C.) District Court. He received a prayer for judgment continued and was ordered to pay court costs. Hall started at right guard in Carolina's season opener against Miami (Ohio) on September 5, but was suspended by Torbush the following week after he was charged with assault.
We do not want situations like this to occur ever, but if and when they do, we will deal with them as swiftly as we know all the facts and on an individual basis, says Torbush. There is no easy formula for disciplining people, and I feel it is important that individual circumstances are handled on a case-by-case basis. In this instance, after hearing all the facts and allowing the case to be heard by the court, we believe it is in the best interest of the University, the athletic program and Jon Hall for him to not rejoin our team until next season.
Jon will remain on athletic grant-in-aid. We hope he will meet all the requirements necessary to rejoin our team in good standing next season.
