Women's Soccer Player Earns Accolades

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - University of North Carolina senior forward Cindy Parlow of Memphis, Tenn., won her third national player of the year award for the 1998 season on Friday, being named the National Player of the Year by Soccer News magazine.
It is the second year that Parlow has been named the POY by Soccer News. She also won the award at the conclusion of the 1996 season.Earlier this year, Parlow was named the National Player of the Year by the Missouri Athletic Sports Foundation and by winning the prestigious Hermann Trophy. Parlow won both of those awards for the second successive year.
Carolina had six players named to the Soccer News' first- or second-team All-America squads for 1998. First-team selections were Parlow, junior midfielder Rebekah McDowell, junior defender Lorrie Fair and senior goalkeeper Siri Mullinix. Named to the second team were senior midfielder Tiffany Roberts and junior midfielder Laurie Schwoy. Sophomore forward Raven McDonald and junior defender Lindsay Stoecker were named honorable mention All-Americas by Soccer News. Soccer News also released its 1998 Elite 11's, where the magazine ranks the top 11 players at each of the four positions on the field for their play during the 1998 campaign. Parlow was named the nation's best forward. At the midfield slot, McDowell ranked second, Schwoy third and Roberts fourth. Fair was named the nations second best defender and Mullinix the top goalie in the U.S. collegiate ranks.
