Chapel Hill, N.C. -- Jarrett Shearin went 4-for-4 to become North Carolina's career hit leader as the Tar Heels defeated Mount Olive, 7-6, Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. Shearin now has 276 career hits, surpassing the old record of 273 set by current UNC assistant coach Chad Holbrook from 1990-93.
With the win, Carolina improved to 38-10 on the season. Mount Olive fell to 47-7. The contest was added to the schedule this week to replace rainouts on the teams' schedules.
Corey Richardson (4-0) made his first pitching appearance since March 12 and picked up the win for Carolina, allowed three hits and one unearned run in 5.0 innings while walking two and striking out six. Derrick DePriest got his sixth save of the season despite allowing three unearned runs in the ninth inning. Bryan Morse (5-1) was the hard-luck loser for the Trojans, allowing three runs and six hits in 5.0 innings while fanning six.
Ryan Blake hit a three-run home run for the Tar Heels in the seventh inning, his fourth homer of the season. Chris LaMarsh went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Matt McCay went 2-for-4 for Carolina. Kevin Worley went 4-for-5 and Scott McCay went 1-for-3 with three RBI for Mount Olive.
Tar Heels scored single runs in the second, third and fifth innings. LaMarsh had an RBI single in the second, Shearin had his record-breaking hit in the third to drive in a run and Ryan Earey drove in a run with a double to rightfield in the fifth.
Mount Olive scored a run in the fourth when Kevin Worley doubled, advanced to third on an errant pickoff attempt by Richardson and scored on a sacrifice fly by Scott McKee. The Trojans added two more runs in the eighth to cut the lead to 7-3 and scored three unearned runs in the top of the ninth, stranding the tying run at third base when the inning ended.
Carolina returns to action Sunday when it begins a three-game series at ACC rival Clemson.
