Tar Heels Defeat Colgate in Season Opener, 18-7

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's lacrosse team outscored visiting Colgate 14-1 to erase an early 7-3 deficit en route to a 18-7 victory in the Tar Heels' season opener. The win gives the Heels a 1-0 start to their season and drops Colgate to 0-1.
Junior attackman Matt Crofton was crucial in Carolina's second quarter comeback. Crofton scored three goals and had one assist in the second alone and finished the night with five total goals. Sophomore Jeff Sonke had four goals before leaving the game at the half due to an hamstring injury sustained during the pre-season. Sophomore Kevin Mehm had two second half goals to seal the Tar Heel victory, including one that came with five seconds left in the game.
Colgate started the game strong led by two goals from senior Eric Freedman in the first. Sophomore attackman Danny Grady also added a goal and an assist.
North Carolina returns to action on Sunday in Durham, NC with 4:00 p.m. game against Butler at the Duke Lacrosse Stadium
