CHAPEL HILL--The University of North Carolina softball program has signed three players, including Durham Riverside's Stacy Fox, only the second in-state pitcher to be recruited by UNC coach Donna Papa. Fox, pitcher Michael Parrott and outfielder Quinn Porter are all are expected to make significant contributions when they enroll at UNC in the fall of 1999.
"I am very excited to have Stacy, Michael and Quinn join our softball team," Papa says. "Both Stacy and Michael will give us excellent depth and will complement our current pitching staff very nicely. As an outfielder, Quinn has very good athletic ability, a strong throwing arm and a solid bat from the left side."
The right-handed Fox was all-conference in 1996, '97 and '98 for Durham Riverside, which advanced to the final four of the state 4A playoffs in 1998. She was conference Player of the Year in 1996 and '98 and earned conference tournament MVP honors in 1997.
Parrott, from Houston, Texas, was her district's MVP and a member of the all-state tournament team in 1998. She was named first-team All-Greater Houston last spring and also batted. 430. On the mound, she was 18-3 for the season, allowing just seven earned runs and striking out 181 in 117 innings.
Porter, from Wesley Chapel, Fla., batted .483 last season at Berkeley Prep. She also starts for her school's volleyball and basketball teams and has been named Berkeley Prep's female Athlete of the Year.
There are three seniors on the current Tar Heel squad, which completed its fall season 7-0 and will begin the 1999 season as defending ACC regular season champions. Carolina's schedule opens Feb. 18 in Chapel Hill against Minnesota. The Tar Heels will host 25 teams at Walnut Creek in Raleigh on Feb. 19-21 for the Triangle Classic.
