Baseball Tops Davidson, 11-6

Chapel Hill, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina baseball team fell behind, 2-0 after the top of the first inning, but battled back and shut out Davidson for six innings before defeating the Wildcats, 11-6, Wednesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. With the win, Carolina improved to 24-5 this season. Davidson fell to 4-24-1.
Michael Horney (3-0) picked up the win in relief for Carolina and in the process lowered his season ERA to 0.89 in 12 appearances this season. Horney came into the game in the top of the fourth and allowed just one hit in 3.0 innings while striking out four. Jamie McDonald (0-4) took the loss for Davidson, allowing eight hits and seven runs in 5.0 innings.
Matt McCay went 2-for-3 with a sacrifice fly, three runs scored and two RBI for Carolina. Clay Hooper went 3-for-5 and Chris LaMarsh was 2-for-3 for the Tar Heels. Tim Frend went 2-for-4 for Davidson.
Davidson jumped out quickly against UNC starter Chris Elmore, scoring two runs on four singles and a sacrifice fly. Elmore settled down after giving up the two runs, allowing five total hits and the two runs in 3.0 innings before being removed in a predetermined pitching rotation.
The Tar Heels scored one run in the second to cut the lead to 2-1. McCay led off the inning with a single to shortstop, advanced to third on a hit batter and a fielder's choice and scored on a sacrifice fly by Wes Reynolds. UNC took a 3-2 lead in the fourth. McCay led off and was hit by a McDonald pitch. Ryan Blake followed with a triple to right that scored McCay and Blake then scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris Maples.
Carolina added three more runs in the fifth. Clay Hooper reached on an error and scored on a double by Chris LaMarsh, who then scored on a double by Jarrett Shearin. Tyrell Godwin's groundout advanced Shearin to third and McCay hit a sacrifice fly for a 6-2 UNC lead. UNC added another run in the sixth when Reynolds led off with a double to left and scored on a single by Clay Hooper.
Davidson scored two runs in the eighth off Carolina reliever Ryan Earey on two singles and two walks. The Wildcats added two more runs in the ninth but their rally fell short when UNC closer Derrick DePriest came into the game.
Carolina returns to action this weekend in a three-game series at ACC rival N.C. State beginning Friday evening.
