CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina's football team battled continued hot weather to complete its first set of two-a-day practices today at its practice facility at Henry Stadium. The Tar Heels completed two-hour workouts at both 9:15 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. as the team prepares for the 1999 season and the Sept. 4 opener against Virginia.
Here are Head Coach Carl Torbush's comments on today's workouts:
"I felt like it went well today. We're probably staying on the field a little longer than we need to, but we've had to take a number of breaks to replenish our fluids because of the heat. I feel like our young men are working really hard, and we're working like we understand the urgency ahead.
"Our fundamentals and technique got a lot better today. We're trying to decide where we are, and the installation of our playbook is very important the rest of this week and into early next week. We'll try to install our entire package, and at that point, probably about next Tuesday, we'll start cutting back and getting ready for Virginia."
On the injury front, freshman defensive back Justin Browne from Arlington, Texas, will miss the 1999 season after suffering a torn lateral collateral ligament in his left knee. He was attempting to make an interception late in morning drills when he landed wrong and suffered the injury.
Two-a-days resume Thursday at Henry Stadium with workouts scheduled for 9:15 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Practices are open to the public the remainder of this week.
