CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina began its second week of preseason football practice with another two-a-day session at the team's practice facility at Henry Stadium.
Head coach Carl Torbush had the following comments following today's drills:
"I really felt like today was a great day. Earlier this morning, our
inside drill was very hard-hitting, very intense. We got everybody
excited, and I thought we had some good licks but we didn't get anybody
hurt. I thought that intensity carried over to the rest of practice.
"We still need to get our consistency down, but I'm seeing a lot of good things and I think that as we start cutting back and getting into our game-plan mode, that'll carry over. So right now I'm excited about where we are and where we're going. What we need to do is to continue to work and build momentum so that we're ready to go on September 4th and not on August 28th."
On team's practice routine:
"I thought one thing we did that was smart is that we didn't overwork them.
We gave them a chance to get their legs back under them Friday, and I
think you saw that in the scrimmage on Saturday. I felt like they were
fresh legged and that they responded very well. Normally, in the first
scrimmage you've got a lot of dead legs. We didn't have that. I thought
we had fresh legs on Saturday because we're doing the things we feel like
are giving our guys a chance to be fresh-legged and mentally alert so that
we can get more done in practice."
On the running backs:
"Today we did a lot of throwing, but in the inside drill they ran tough and
got hit hard. But I felt like in the scrimmage on Saturday the two
freshmen looked fast and they looked quick, and I think right now we've got
some great competition. We've got a very healthy problem that we didn't
have in the past. If everyone will stay healthy and continue to work we've
got some decisions we'll need to make in about a week and a half. But I do
feel like every one of the tailbacks has a chance to be a contributor, not
only as a tailback, but also on special teams, because some of those guys
are big enough to be linebacker-types on special teams on certain things we
do."
Tuesday marks the Tar Heels' final day of two-a-days, as classes begin on Wednesday.
