DePriest Shines in Cape Cod League

Senior pitcher Derrick DePriest has been awarded the Cape Cod Baseball League's Russ Ford Award, given each summer to the CCBL's top relief pitcher. DePriest, whose 1.71 ERA last year at Carolina was an NCAA best, recorded a Cape League-record 15 saves and a remarkable 0.00 ERA for the Chatham Athletics. He also earned a spot on the East Division All-Star team.
DePriest was one of four Tar Heels to play this summer with Chatham, which finished first in the CCBL's Eastern Division with a 30-14 record before falling in the league's championship series to the Cotuit Kettleers. Ryan Earey, Clay Hooper and Dan Moylan were also on the Athletics' roster. Sophomore catcher Ryan Blake played for the Harwich Mariners.
Earey both pitched and played first base for Chatham. He finished the summer with a .241 batting average and a team-high 26 RBI, while on the mound he was 1-1 with one save in four appearances. Hooper played in 35 games at second base for the Athletics and hit .278, good for fourth-best on the team. Moylan hit .235 was named an All-Star after playing in 33 games at catcher. Blake saw action in 31 games at catcher for Harwich, where he hit .187 and tied for the team-lead with 24 walks.
