The University of North Carolina officially began preparations for the 1999 football season today as 33 Tar Heel freshmen completed their first full day of collegiate workouts. Head Coach Carl Torbush and his staff directed the 24 scholarship and nine walk-on players through practices from 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. and 5:30-6:45 p.m.
"The kids worked real hard today. It's been a long day," Torbush said. "With all the physical testing and medical testing we put the guys through, this is probably as tough a day of practice as they'll have at Carolina.
"It will be interesting to see how they do tomorrow, so we can start to see where they'll fit in down the road. I think maybe the best thing we saw today was that everyone we went out and recruited has a legitimate chance to play here at Carolina. If we had to go out and do it all over again, I don't think we missed on a single one. And that's a pretty powerful statement."
Also of note, in today's strength and conditioning drills, Jeb Terry (Dallas, Texas) won both the strength test and 1,000-yard shuttle run for lineman. Terry bench pressed 400 pounds. Among the skilled positions, wide receiver Jamal Jones (Washington, D.C.) benched 325 pounds to take top honors and defensive back Dexter Reid (Norfolk, Va.) was the fastest in the 1,000-yard shuttle run.
The freshmen resume their workouts Saturday from 9:30-10:45 a.m. and 5:15-6:30 p.m. Practices are open to the public and take place at the Tar Heels' practice facility at Henry Stadium. Carolina's first full-squad workout, which is also open to fans, is scheduled for next Tuesday (Aug. 10) from 5-7 p.m.
