September 11, 1999 | Women's Lacrosse
PERTH, Australia - University of North Carolina freshman Betsy Gaines (Baltimore, Md.) scored three goals Wednesday as the United States Under-19 women's lacrosse team defeated the defending world champion Australians, 15-8, to win the 1999 IFWLA Smater Than Smoking World Championship. Gaines tied for the team lead with three goals in the championship game with Virginia's Lauren Aumiller, who had three goals and three assists.
Gaines, a midfielder, was a two-time high school first-team All-America selection at Roland Park Country School in Baltimore. She was named first-team All-Metro in three sports in high school - field hockey, basketball and lacrosse.
Theresa Sherry of the Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, who sang the national anthem before the match, was named the player of the match. Aumiller led all scorers in the game as the Americans avenged their loss in 1995 in the first World Championship match.
Kelsey Twist of Roland Park Country high school started the scoring for the USA with a goal at the 29:50 mark, and the Americans never looked back. The USA had a 9-4 advantage at the break.
The goalkeeping tandem of Amy Price (the Bryn Mawr School) and Meghan McInnes (Roland Park Country HS) combined for 10 saves on the afternoon in helping the defense stifle the Australian attack.
Commented USA head coach Wendy Kridel, "They played great from one end of the field to the other."
The USA went undefeated in the tournament as it joined the USA Elite Women's Lacrosse team that captured the World Cup in 1997. The Elite team also defeated the Australians to retain possession of the cup.
