Men's Tennis Opens At Continental Airlines Cup

HOUSTON - The University of North Carolina men's tennis team opened its season this weekend in the 1999 Rice University Continental Airlines Cup Tennis Tournament at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium at Houston, Texas. Carolina players faced opponents from Louisiana State University, Rice University and Texas A&M. Junior Chad Riley and sophomore Marico Petrone each won two of their three matches over the weekend in A flight singles and senior Remi Adamek won the D flight singles bracket.
In the A flight singles, Carolina junior Chad Riley lost his first match to Tom Hand of LSU, 6-4, 2-6, 3-6 on Friday. He beat Keith From of Texas A&M on Saturday by a score of 5-7, 6-2, 7-5, and Riley beat LSU's Daniel Kiernan 1-6, 7-6, 6-4 on Sunday. Also in A flight, sophomore Marico Petrone defeated Rice's Robert Collins 7-6, 5-7, 6-1 on Friday. On Saturday, Petrone lost to Texas A&M's Cody Hubbell (3-6, 7-6, 1-6), and on Sunday, Petrone beat Rice's Fabien Giraud 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.
In B flight singles, freshman Tyne Brownlow lost three matches. Rice's Alexis Pourchet beat Brownlow 6-7, 6-1, 6-1 on Friday. Brownlow lost 2-6, 0-6 to Juan Aramburo of Texas A&M on Saturday. On Sunday, he defaulted to Ajay Ramaswami of LSU. Carolina freshman Trystan Meniane beat Ramaswami on Friday, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. He lost to Rice's Prakash Venkataraman 2-6, 3-6 on Saturday and won by default over LSU's Jesse Smatt on Sunday.
In C flight singles, freshman Greg Archer lost to LSU's Mario Alvarez 6-4, 1-6, 4-6 on Friday and lost to Rice's Matthias Matthaes on Saturday, 7-6, 3-6, 2-6. Also in C flight, Carolina sophomore Ben Elix defeated Texas A&M's Gonzalo Anderson 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 on Friday. Elix lost on Saturday to Anthony Mateljan of LSU 4-6, 2-6, and he lost to Mario Alvarez on Sunday, 4-6, 6-1, 0-6.
Carolina senior Remi Adamek won the D flight singles championship. He defeated Texas A&M's Cory Hubbard 6-0, 6-2 on Friday and Rice's Ramez Qamer 7-5, 6-0 on Saturday. In the championship match, Adamek defeated LSU's John Gray Pou 6-0, 3-6, 6-3. Freshman Max Hilkey beat Andrew Spiegel of Texas A&M on Friday, 6-4, 6-7, 4-1 (retired). Hilkey lost to John Gray Pou of LSU on Saturday (1-6, 0-6), and he lost to Ramez Qamer on Sunday (1-6, 1-6).
In A flight doubles action, Carolina's Riley and Meniane paired to reach the finals. They defeated Hand/Alvarez of Rice on Friday (9-8) and beat Mathaes/Pourchet of Rice on Saturday (8-6). Riley and Meniane lost to Mateljan/Ramaswami of LSU 8-9 on Sunday. Carolina's Petrone and Elix lost by default to From/Skube of Texas A&M on Friday and won by default over Rice's Collins/Venkataraman on Saturday. They lost to Anderson/Hubbell of Texas A&M on Sunday (1-8).
In B flight doubles, Brownlow and Hilkey lost to Rice's Jackson/Qamer on Friday (2-8) and won by default over Spiegel/Hubbard of Texas A&M on Saturday. The pair defaulted to Carolina's other team, Archer and Adamek on Sunday. Archer and Adamek lost to Moros/Aramburo of Texas A&M on Friday (3-8) and won their last two matches by default, over Smatt/Nicholson of LSU and Archer/Adamek of UNC.
