STATE COLLEGE, Pa.-The University of North Carolina field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season Sunday, 1-0 at Penn State. The Nittany Lions' Traci Anselmo scored off a penalty corner with 4:06 remaining in the game to extend Penn State's home field winning streak to 24 games.
"Our defense played exceptionally well, but Penn State gained momentum and started to counter," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "I knew this game would be a battle. We got all we expected and more."
UNC led 6-4 on penalty corners but trailed Penn State 11-5 in shots on goal.
The Tar Heels travel to Pennsylvania again next weekend, to play in a tournament at Temple University. On Saturday in Philadelphia, UNC will take on Michigan State at 1:30 p.m. Depending on the outcome of Saturday's tournament games, Sunday's game will match Carolina with either Temple or Louisville at 11 a.m. or 1:30 p.m.
