Men's Lacrosse Player Matt Kull Passes Away

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - University of North Carolina men's lacrosse player Matt Kull, 20, passed away Friday after a long bout with cancer at the Sloan Kettering Medical Center in New York, N.Y. Kull was a red-shirt sophomore defenseman at UNC and a native of Mohegan Lake, N.Y.
Visitation will be held at the Beecher Funeral Home in Pleasantville, N.Y. on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The Beecher Funeral Home is located at 418 Bedford Road in Pleasantville, N.Y. (914-769-0001). The funeral service will be held on Monday, January 24, 2000 at 10:30 a.m. at the Mormon Church in Yorktown, N.Y.
Kull was the son of Gary and Denah Kull of Mohegan Lake, N.Y. Matt graduated from Yorktown High School in 1997 where he played both football and lacrosse. His greatest prowess came as a lacrosse player as he earned high school All-America honors and as a senior and was recruited by several NCAA Division I men's lacrosse programs.
Matt enrolled at Carolina in the fall of 1997 and immediately made his presence felt on the lacrosse field. During his freshman year he earned a starting spot on the close defense unit in the season's fifth game and started the remainder of the season as Carolina earned an NCAA Tournament berth. Last season, he started the first six games of the season for the Tar Heels on close defense before symptoms of his illness forced him to the sidelines.
He had received treatment for his illness over the course of the past year at Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City.
Kull was born on July 3, 1979 at Waldorf, Md.
