
Carolina Volleyball Falls To Wake Forest 3-2

CHAPEL HILL - Friday the 13th was unlucky for the University of North Carolina volleyball team as they fell to Wake Forest 7-15, 6-15, 15-10, 16-14, 13-15 at Carmichael Auditorium with a record 7,442 fans in attendance. The Tar Heels are 16-4 for the season and 6-1 in the ACC. The Deacons outhit Carolina .204 to .193 in a grueling two and a half hour match.
Four Carolina players posted double-doubles and tacked on career highs as well. Laura Greene rallied career highs in both kills and digs with 27 and 31 respectively. Casey Simpson registered 23 kills and a career high 18 digs. Krista Buchholz notched a career high 19 kills and a match-high six block assists. Eve Rackham recorded a match-high 70 assists and 16 digs.
In game one the Deacons took an early lead of 0-4, the Tar Heels were never able to close the gap to more than five as Wake Forest outhit Carolina .163 to .038. Defensively, the Deacons had five team blocks to Carolina's one.
Game two was identical with Wake Forest jumping to 0-4. Carolina went on a four point run to tie the score 4-4. The Deacons surged ahead with three unanswered points and held the Tar Heels to only six points ending the game on an 8-0 run.
In game three the Tar Heels, paced by 12 kills from Greene, took an early lead. The Deacons tied the game three times but Carolina pulled ahead and a kill by Holly Strauss clinched the game 15-10.
Game four saw a fired up team as the Tar Heels took the lead and the teams battled back and forth with side outs. The Deacon tied the score at 8-8, 10-10, 11-11 and finally 14-14. As a team, Carolina collected seven team blocks. A service ace by Liz Feldman won the game 16-14.
Game five was a battle from start to finish. Carolina and Wake Forest went point for point and with the game tied at 11-11, the Deacons pulled ahead and took game five and the match 15-13.
Trina Maso de Mayo led Wake Forest with 27 kills and a match-high 44 digs. A total of four Deacons had double-doubles including Margaret Davidson with 15 kills and 18 digs and Jessica Hood with 13 kills and 10 digs.
Next up for Carolina, the Tar Heels host the Duke Blue Devils on Sunday, October 15 at 3:00 p.m. in Carmichael Auditorium
