
Carolina Volleyball Downs Duke 3-1

Chapel Hill - After a heart-wrenching loss to Wake Forest on Friday night (Oct. 13), the University of North Carolina volleyball team bounced back to defeat Duke 15-8, 15-13, 11-15, 15-8 on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 15) at Carmichael Auditorium. The Tar Heels are 17-4 for the season and 7-1 in the ACC. As a team, Carolina measured a season high 19 team blocks to the Blue Devils seven.
Carolina was paced by Casey Simpson with her eighth double-double of the season collecting 23 kills and 19 digs. Laura Greene posted 18 kills and 16 digs. Malaika Underwood and Lisa Fryer chipped in 19 digs and 16 digs respectively. Eve Rackham tallied a match-high 51 assists and 17 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Krista Buchholz registered a match-high 10 block assists and one solo block along with nine kills.
In game s one and two, Carolina never allowed Duke to take the lead. The defense kept the Blue Devils to a negative hitting percentage in game one and only .089 in game two.
In game three, the Tar Heels went on a 10-0 run and appeared to have the game and the match guaranteed. The Blue Devils exploded and rallied nine unanswered points and would tie the game 11-11. Duke was able to hold the Tar Heels to 11 points as they rallied for six more points and took the game 15-11.
Game four saw a focused team as they jumped to an early lead of 7-0. Duke would answer back bringing the score to 10-6. Simpson posted six kills in game four including the winning point to win the game 15-11.
The Blue Devils had three players post double-digit kills and four players with double digits in digs. Byrn Gallagher led Duke with 15 kills and 20 digs. Jill Sonne added 11 kills and 14 digs and Dorette Burwell notched 14 kills and 10 digs.
Carolina's win over Duke adds 1.5 points to the Carlyle Cup Challenge. Carolina leads the overall series 10.5 to 0. Carolina volleyball continues its five game home stand facing Virginia on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Carolina is 1-0 against the Cavaliers this season, defeating them 3-2 in Charlottesville, VA.
