Tar Heel Women Golfers Move Up To 10th After Second Round At Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, TN ---- North Carolina's women's golf team moved up one position to tenth place following the second round of the Mercedes-Benz Women's Champion in Knoxville Tennessee. As a team the Tar Heels fired a second round score of 308, a fifteen-stroke improvement from the first day of competition. They currently have a total team score of 631 for the tournament.
Leading the tournament in team competition is Duke University with a second round score of 297 and a score of 597 after 36 holes. The University of Tennessee is in second place with a second round score of 297 and a score of 599 after 36 holes. Northwestern, Louisiana State and Purdue round out the top five in team competition.
Individually, the Tar Heels are led by Sophomore Abby Spector who has shot a two-day total of 155 and is currently tied with five others for 23rd place. Spector fired a second round score of 78. Freshman Ashley Prange had the Tar Heels best second round finish shooting a 75. Prange finished tied for 31st place with a score of 157. Junior Shelly McKevitt shot a 79 to tie for 36th place with a two day score of 158. Junior Beth Lever shot a 76 finishing with a score of 168 and tied for 66th place. Junior Heather Angell shot an 84 to tie for 70th place.
Northwestern's Christie Hermes and Louisiana State's Meredith Duncan lead the tournament shooting 144 after 36 holes. Candy Hannemann and Virada Nirapathpongporn of Duke and Young-A Yang of Tennessee are tied for 3rd after 36 holes with a score of 146.
The final round of the tournament will be held tomorrow. The 54-hole event is being played at the Gettysvue Polo, Golf & Country Club, which features a par 72, 5,958-yard layout.
