
Carolina Volleyball Sweeps Virginia

CHAPEL HILL--The University of North Carolina volleyball team defeated the Virginia Cavaliers 15-7, 15-13, 18-16 at Carmichael Auditorium Tuesday night (Oct. 17). The three-game match lasted a grueling two hours as the teams exchanged numerous side outs and were plagued with errors. Carolina is 18-4 and 8-1 in the ACC.
A total of four Carolina players registered double-digits in kills. Laura Greene continued to shine for the Tar Heels leading the team with 18 kills and 16 digs. Casey Simpson posted 16 kills and 15 digs. Eve Rackham tallied a match-high 58 assists and Nicole Reis tied Greene's match-high kills with 18 of her own. Krista Buchholz notched 12 kills and a match-high six block assists and Lisa Fryer chipped in 11 digs.
In game one, UNC jumped to an early as they rattled off six straight points. The Cavaliers would answer back with their own 4-0 run. The Carolina defense held Virginia to a .106 hitting percentage as the team posted five of their 12 total team blocks in the game. UNC held the Cavaliers to seven points in the game winning 15-7.
Game two saw the teams battling for side outs with numerous hitting and service errors. With the score tied 3-3, Virginia rallied four unanswered points. Greene paced the team adding eight kills and helped tie the game 10-10. Virginia would tie the game at 12-12 and 13-13 before the Tar Heels surged ahead to win 15-13.
In game three the Tar Heels again took an early lead but the teams once again exchanged side outs. The score was tied nine times throughout the game. Carolina produced 31 kills on 88 attempts and 37 digs in game three. UNC was able to hold on and with the score tied at 16-16 forced hitting errors and clinched the game 18-16.
The Cavaliers were led by Deanna Zwarich with 17 kills followed by Jenny Harmon with 11 kills and 10 digs. Paige Davis registered 10 kills and 13 digs and Abby Whittenburg tallied 30 assists for Virginia.
The Tar Heels continue to host ACC action on Friday (Oct. 20) at 7:00 p.m. when they face Florida State. In their last meeting on October 4, Carolina defeated the Seminoles 3-2. This game marks the third Wachovia Challenge attendance event of the season. An attendance goal of 400 has been set for the match and the first 100 fans will receive a free journal book.
