UNC Women Golfers Tenth After First Round At Furman

GREENVILLE, SC - North Carolina's women's golf team is in 10th place after carding a first round team score of 302 at the Lady Paladin Invitational in Greenville, SC. The Tar Heels finish the first round two shots behind Memphis and TCU who are tied for 8th position. The Heels are 11 shots back of tournament leader Auburn University. The Auburn women finished off the afternoon shooting a team score of three-over 291. They hold a 4 shot lead over Furman and Wake Forest who are tied for second place. South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Florida round out the top five following the first day.
In individual competition, the Tar Heels were led by Heather Angell who finished the day carding a one-under 71. She shot a 34 on the front nine and 37 on the back nine and is currently tied with two others for 3rd place. Junior Shelley McKevitt and Freshman Ashley Prange find themselves tied for 34th after shooting first round scores of 76. Abby Spector and Beth Lever both sit in 59th position after firing opening rounds of 79.
The tournament leader is Celeste Troche from Auburn who shot a 34 on both the front and back nine to finish with a 4-under 68. She currently holds a two-stroke lead over Wake Forest's Nuria Clau who carded a 70. In addition to Carolina's Angell, the third position is also held by Vanderbilt's Meredeth Ward and Furman's Jennifer Perri who carded scores of 71.
The tournament is being held at the Furman Golf Course which is a par 72 course comprised of 5, 917 yards.
