
Carolina Volleyball Sweeps Maryland

CHAPEL HILL--The University of North Carolina volleyball team defeated Maryland 15-10, 15-5, 15-3 Sunday (Oct. 22) afternoon at Carmichael Auditorium. As a team, Carolina recorded 10 team blocks to Maryland's one and the UNC outhit the Terps .362 to .060. The Tar Heels are 20-4 for the season and 10-1 in the ACC.
Casey Simpson led the Heels posting a match-high 18 kills on 29 attempts with only two errors. Freshman Aletha Green recorded a season high 11 kills with a .625 hitting percentage. Holly Strauss registered six block assists and Lisa Fryer tallied a match-high 12 digs. Eve Rackham added 40 assists, nine digs and three block assists for the Heels.
In game one both teams were off to an even start. With the score tied 4-4 UNC went on a 3-0 run which the Terps matched with two unanswered points. Simpson produced 12 kills in game one to pace Carolina and Green rallied the game winning kill to win 15-10.
The Tar Heels jumped to an early lead in games two and three holding the Terps to a total of eight points combined. Green tallied five kills with no errors and produced the game winning point for game two, 15-5. In game three the Heels once again held the Terps to two points going on a 10-0 run paced by Krista Buchholz who produced four kills and one block assists.
Carey Brennan led the Terps with 11 kills and six digs. Nnenna Amobi tallied eight kills and Lindsay Davey posted 24 assists and seven digs.
Carolina will continue ACC action on the road beginning with Duke Friday (Oct. 27) at 7:00 p.m. in Durham, N.C. The Heels then travel to Winston-Salem on Saturday to face Wake Forest at 7:00 p.m.
