
Carolina Volleyball Edges Duke In Five Game Thriller

Chapel Hill - The University of North Carolina defeated the Duke Blue Devils 15-7, 15-7, 13-15, 13-15, 17-15 at Cameron Indoor Arena Friday night (Oct.27). Carolina edged the Blue Devils in a five-game rally match and move to 21-4 for the season and 11-1 in the ACC. The Tar Heels added another 1.5 points to the Carlyle Cup standings and Carolina leads Duke, 12-0.
Carolina was led by Laura Greene with a match high 26 kills and eight digs. Casey Simpson and Krista Buchholz posted 19 kills each and Lisa Fryer added 15 digs. Eve Rackham tallied a match high 66 assists and 11 digs for her seventh double-double of the season and Liz Feldman chipped in 15 digs.
Carolina jumped out to an early lead in game one outhitting the Blue Devils .429 to .106. The score was 7-4 when the Tar Heels went on a 5-0 run. Duke answered with two points but was kept to 7 as Carolina took game one, 15-7.
In game two, Malaika Underwood served for seven straight Carolina points. Defensively, UNC kept Duke to a negative hitting percentage as the team recorded 12 kills on 27 attempts. With the score 13-4, Duke rallied four points including two service aces before Carolina would end the game 15-7.
Game three saw a determined Duke team as they went on an eight-point run to lead 2-10. Paced by Simpson and Greene, the Heels would rally back to within one. Duke was able to hold on to clinch the game, 13-15.
Game four was similar to three with the Blue Devils battling the Tar Heels for side outs. Carolina would fight back tying the score a total of seven times, but the Duke defense kept the Heels to a .077 hitting percentage and took game four, 13-15.
Game five was a battle from the start with each team answering point for point. The score was tied repeatedly and a block by freshman hitterAletha Green would tie the score 15-15. Simpson hammered the last two kills to take the match 17-15.
The Blue Devils were paced by Ashley Harris with 17 kills and 16 digs. Jill Sonne also posted a double-double with 10 kills and 16 digs. Krista Dill also chipped in 16 kills and Pamela Goffred contributed 51 assists. Duke falls to 4-7 in the ACC and 15-10 for the season.
Carolina heads to Winston-Salem to face Wake Forest on Saturday (Oct. 28) at 7:00 p.m. The Deacons are the only ACC team to defeat the Tar Heels this season when they took a five game match Oct. 13 at Carmichael Arena.
