Carrieri Leading Nation in Scoring

Chapel Hill, N.C. -- University of North Carolina men's soccer player Chris Carrieri, the leading candidate for Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year in 2000, leads the nation in scoring in statistics released by the NCAA late Monday night.
Carrieri, a junior forward from Stafford, Va., has 52 points in 16 games this season and leads the NCAA with 3.25 points per game. He also ranks second in the nation with 1.25 goals per game and third with 0.75 assists per game. Tar Heel senior Michael Bucy is tied for sixth in the nation with 0.69 assists per game.
The Tar Heels are second in the country in scoring offense with 3.38 goals per game and 12th with 0.81 goals allowed per contest. Carolina (14-2, 4-1 ACC) has the third-best winning percentage in the country at .875.
Carrieri leads the ACC in every offensive category: points (52), goals (20), assists (12), scoring (3.25 ppg), goals per game (1.25) and assists per game (0.75). As a team, the Tar Heels boast the ACC's top scoring offense (3.38 goals per game) and top scoring defense (0.81 gpg allowed). UNC's Caleb Norkus ranks second in the conference in scoring with 33 points and three players are tied for second in goals with 13.
Carrieri's 20 goals equal Derek Missimo's school record for goals in a season, set in 1989. Carrieri already shattered Missimo's previous UNC record for points in a season, 44, set in 1989.
Carrieri and the Tar Heels are tied with Duke and Virginia atop the ACC standings this week. UNC hosts Elon on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. at Fetzer Field and will play its final ACC game of the regular season on Saturday night when it hosts Wake Forest at 7:00 p.m.
