NORFOLK, Va.-The University of North Carolina field hockey team finished its regular-season schedule on a high note Sunday with a 4-0 win over William & Mary. The game was played Old Dominion's Foreman Field, which will be the site of the NCAA Championships on Nov. 17 and 19.
The Tar Heels' 17-2 record marks their best regular-season finish since 1996, when UNC wrapped up the regular season 18-1 and went on to win its third national championship.
The win over 12th-ranked William & Mary was North Carolina's 11th of the season over teams ranked among the nation's top 20. The No. 2 Tar Heels got the only goal they'd need with 12:17 remaining in the first half when junior back Abby Martin scored on a penalty corner, assisted by senior forward Holly Huff and senior back Erin Cox. Less than two minutes later, Martin made it 2-0 on another penalty corner, again assisted by Huff and Cox.
In the second half, the Tar Heels got unassisted field goals from junior forwards Katie McDonald (24:08 to play) and Abbey Woolley (20:56 to play). The shutout was the seventh of the season for UNC goalkeeper Amy Tran, who made three saves.
Next up for the Tar Heels is the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament, which begins on Thursday in College Park, Md. UNC, which earned the top seed by finishing ACC play 4-0, opens Friday at 7 p.m. against the winner of Thursday's game between Virginia and Duke, the fourth and fifth seeds. The championship game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Sunday and will be televised by Home Team Sports.
