
Carolina Volleyball Downs NC State

Chapel Hill--The University of North Carolina volleyball team defeated NC State 15-12, 15-8, 7-15, 14-16, 16-7 in a Halloween match Tuesday night at Carmichael Auditorium. The Tar Heels also honored its seniors, Liz Feldman, Lisa Fryer and Casey Simpson in the last home match of the 2000 season. UNC's 2000 home record is 16-2. The Heels advance to 22-5, and 12-2 in ACC action.
Carolina had three players in double-digits led by Laura Greene with 20 kills. Krista Buchholz and Casey Simpson registered 13 and 11 respectively. Malaika Underwood tallied 19 digs followed by Eve Rackham and Liz Feldman with 11 each. Lisa Fryer added 10 digs and three service aces. Defensively, Carolina rallied 19 team blocks to NC State's nine.
NC State jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game one and the Tar Heels came back to tie the game 8-8. The Wolfpack answered with four points but Carolina would hold NC State to 12 as the Heels rallied seven points to take the game, 15-12.
In game two, Carolina jumped to an early lead and with the score at 13-4 the Wolfpack rallied four points. This was not enough as the Tar Heels kept NC State to a negative hitting percentage and a kill from Greene sealed game two, 15-8.
Game three saw a renewed Wolfpack team as they jumped to a 1-9 lead on the Tar Heels. NC State out hit UNC .367 to .034 and took the game 15-7. Game four was a battle as both teams exchanged side outs. NC State was up 12-6 when the Heels went on an 8-2 run led by Greene with six kills. NC State held on to take game four and force a fifth rally game.
Carolina pounded the ball in game five and defensively outblocked NC State 4-0 keeping the Wolfpack to a negative hitting percentage. The Tar Heels surged to a 15-7 win.
NC State was led by Charece Williams with a match high 27 kills and 21 digs. Stephanie Stambaugh also posted a double-double with 17 kills and 16 digs. Meredith Price recorded a match high 34 digs and six kills.
The Tar Heels begin a three game road trip leading up to the ACC Tournament (Nov. 16-19) hosted by Wake Forest. Carolina travels to Notre Dame this Saturday (Nov. 4) before matching up with Clemson (Nov. 7) and Georgia Tech (Nov. 11).
