Duke Captures Title For Fourth Year In A Row

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Duke University defended its championship yet again by capturing the Franklin Street Trust Tar Heel Invitational Sunday for the fourth year in a row. The Blue Devils shot a final-round score of 11-over-par 309 to bring their three-day team total to 30-over par 894. Fellow Blue Devils Candy Hannemann and Leigh Anne Hardin pushed Duke to victory by capturing co-medalist honors with a three-day total of four-over-par 220. Hannemann and Hardin each carded a 75 on the final day to give them a one-shot victory over Jennifer Perri of Furman, who finished with a three-day score of five-over-par 221. Tina Schneeberger of Tennessee shot a final round of two-over-par 74 to tie her for fourth place with Georgia's Laura Henderson with a three-day total of eight-over-par 224.
Tennessee finished the tournament 19 shots back of Duke at 49-over-par 913, while Georgia rounds out the top three with a final three-day team score of 58-over-par 922. The Tar Heels fired a final round team score of 39-over-par 327 to finish the weekend in 12th place with a final team total of 91-over-par 955.
Freshman Ashley Prange led North Carolina with a three-day score of 20-over-par 236, tying her for 26th place. Heather Angell finished the weekend tied for 44th place with a total score of 25-over-par 241, while Beth Lever finished tied for 50th place at 26-over-par 242. Shelley McKevitt rounds out the Tar Heels in team play with a final score of 28-over-par 288 after carding a final round 10-over-par 82. Playing individually, junior Britta Olson carded a final round 16-over-par 88 to give her a final total of 33-over-par 249, leaving her tied for 73rd place. Moira Murphy finished the weekend in 80th place with a final score of 39-over-par 255. Also, Stacy Hilton and Lauren Quinn finished the tournament tied in 89th place at 59-over-par 275.
Kelly Lagedrost of South Florida scored a hole-in-one on the par-3, 140-yard 14th hole. The ace helped Lagedrost to a final round three-over-par 75 tying her for eighth place overall.
The tournament was played at Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, NC. Finley features a par-72, 6,181-yard layout.
