Tar Heel Netters Advance In Top Of The Hill/ITA Regional Qualifying

Chapel Hill, NC - The Tar Heel men's tennis team got off to a solid start in the qualifying round of the Top Of The Hill/ITA Region II Championships on Wednesday. The host Tar Heels were victorious in four of five qualifying matches and will continue qualifying play on Thursday.
Sophomore Max Hilkey began play for Carolina and defeated William and Mary's Joe Brooks 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. The win moves Hilkey into a second round qualifying match with Old Dominion's Calin Milos to be played at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday.
Freshman Nicholas Monroe continued the Tar Heels0 strong play with a straight set 6-3, 6-2, victory over Juan Yannuzzi of East Tennessee State. With the win, Monroe advances to second round qualifying and will play Trent Brendon of Wake Forest Thursday morning at 8:00 a.m.
The only loss for the Heels came in a hard-fought third set tiebreaker as Tar Heel senior Chad Riley fell to High Point's Erik Petterson 6-2, 4-6, 7-6. However, Riley bounced back with doubles partner Trystan Meniane to advance in doubles qualifying with a victory over Charleston Southern's tandem of Futuro and Villarrosi, 9-7.
Sophomore Greg Archer continued Carolina's winning ways in the final singles match of the day. Archer won in straight sets 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) over Florida State's Rodrigo Laub. Archer will see action in second round qualifying on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. where he will face David Bere of Wake Forest.
The Top of The Hill/ITA Region II tournament will run through Sunday. All play is being held at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill. Singles main draw play will begin Friday morning and doubles main draw action will begin Thursday night. The singles finalists and the doubles champions will qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championships to be held in February.
