UNC Takes Second Consecutive ACC Volleyball Title

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The No. 2 seeded North Carolina Tar Heels won their eighth ACC Championship and second straight title with a 3-1 victory over the No. 5 seeded Duke Blue Devils in the 2000 Atlantic Coast Conference Volleyball Championship held on the campus of Wake Forest University. The Tar Heels defeated the Blue Devils 10-15, 15-6, 15-10, 15-7, improving their record to 26-7 while Duke falls to 21-12 on the season.
The Heels were led by Nicole Reis and Casey Simpson, who each tallied 18 kills in the four-game match. Six different North Carolina players registered double-figure dig totals. Reis and Simpson collected 20 and 19 digs, respectively, while Laura Greene chipped in 12 digs.
North Carolina head coach Joe Sagula stated, "I was amazed on how well the team performed and their resilience was commendable even after dropping the first game. Teams have come at us hard this season and I am proud how these players have responded."
For the Blue Devils, sophomore right side hitter Jill Sonne recorded 14 kills while also contributing eight digs and a .225 hitting percentage. Running the Duke offense was junior setter Pam Gottfred, who finished the match with 37 assists. Team totals for the Blue Devils were 55 kills, 76 digs and 12 blocks in the four game match.
"I feel like North Carolina played really well but I'm proud of how our team played throughout this championship. We showed the conference what we are all about and we will be back next year" stated Duke head coach Jolene Nagel.
