University of North Carolina head football coach Carl Torbush along with senior captain Brandon Spoon helped kick off the Kids Cards project today in the pediatrics playroom at UNC Hospitals.
Torbush is the honorary chair of the Kids Cards Project, which produces note cards and holiday cards designed by pediatric patients at UNC Hospitals. Proceeds from the sale of these cards, which has topped $300,000 over the project's 14-year history, help meet the special emotional, educational and recreational needs of young patients and their families. The Kids Cards are available at participating Lowe's Foods and Harris Teeters in Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Durham.
This is just one of many community involvements the UNC football team has performed this year as part of "Carolina Community Commitment."
Earlier this season, representatives from the UNC football team spoke and read to children at local elementary schools in Chapel Hill. Alge Crumper spoke to a fourth grade class at Frank Porter Graham Elementary School, Spoon read to McDougle Elementary School kids and Antwon Black spoke to a group at Seawell Elementary School.
In conjunction with the Chapel Hill Police Department, the football office is providing tickets for the Nov. 11 game vs. Maryland to underprivileged local children who might not otherwise be able to attend the game.
