Petrone and Meniane Advance To Round Of 32 In Top Of The Hill/ITA Region II Championships

Chapel Hill, NC - Friday's action at the Top of The Hill/ITA Region II Championships saw two Tar Heel netters advance in main draw singles. Marcio Petrone and Trystan Meniane both won exciting matches to advance to the round of 32.
airro, Meireles, Brazil native Petrone won a straight set victory 6-3, 6-4 over Wake Forest's Brett Mauro. The win earns Petrone a matchup with William and Mary's Trevor Spracklin to be played Saturday at 9:00 a.m. Spracklin defeated Duke's Ted Rueger in three sets 3-6, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (6) to advance.
For Tar Heel Trystan Meniane, the afternoon provided a series of momentum swings as he fought Furman's Lee Nickell to a three set 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4 victory. The first set saw Meniane fall behind five games to zero before fighting back to force the first set tiebreak. The second set was much like the first as Nickell led three games to none before Meniane rallied back to his winning form to take the set's final six games. Meniane moves on to play Virginia Commonwealth's Fernado Sanchez at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
Failing to advance for the Tar Heels on Friday were the doubles tandem of Petrone and Monroe who fell to William and Mary's Erickson and Strik 8-5. Singles participant David Cheatwood also fell on Friday to South Carolina's Seth Rose 6-1, 6-3.
Saturday's action will see round of 32 and 16 singles as well as quarter and semifinal action in the doubles draw. All matches are being held indoors at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill.
