University of North Carolina baseball player Sean Farrell, a freshman from Charlotte, N.C., has been named the ACC's Player of the Week after an outstanding effort in Carolina's three-game sweep of then-No. 2 UCLA last weekend in Westwood.
Farrell finished the series 5-for-10 at the plate, including two home runs and a double, and he knocked in nine RBI. In the first game with the Bruins, Farrell helped propel Carolina to an improbable 13-run ninth inning for a 17-13 come-from-behind win. He entered the game in the sixth inning as a pinch hitter and was 3-for-4 with five RBI and he scored twice. He singled in the eighth inning and then hit both a two-run home run and a two-run double in the ninth that put UNC ahead for good with its 14th and 15th runs of the game. He followed that up with his second homer of the season, a two-run shot in the sixth, in Saturday's 6-4 victory. In the series finale, he had two sacrifice flies in helping Carolina to a 12-11 win in a rain-shortened game.
Farrell is a 1999 graduate of Charlotte Latin High School, where he was twice named All-Mecklenburg County in baseball. As a senior, he was the conference player of the year as well as the team captain and most valuable player.
