Chapel Hill, N.C. --
The 4th-ranked University of North Carolina baseball team picked up an 8-0 win over Seton Hall Friday afternoon in front of 1,155 in attendance at Boshamer Stadium. Eric Henderson pitched seven scoreless innings for his third victory of the season as the Tar Heels improved to 11-0 in 2000. Seton Hall starter B.J. Benik gave up three runs on seven hits over six innings for the loss in the Pirates' first game of the season.
The win was Carolina's 42nd straight over a non-conference foe in Chapel Hill and its 2,000th all-time victory. The Tar Heel baseball program has posted a 2,000-1,191-36 record in 111 seasons.
Carolina struck first in the fourth inning. Jay Madeira reached on a two-out double and Russ Adams knocked the first baseman home with a single to center. The Tar Heels added two more runs in the fifth. Consecutive singles by Matt McCay, Chad Prosser and Adam Greenberg loaded the bases before Dan Moylan sent a sacrifice fly to right to score McCay. Clay Hooper knocked in a run of his own to push the Carolina advantage to 3-0.
Carolina added a run in the seventh and four more in the eighth for the 8-0 final tally. Ryan Earey hit his team-leading fourth home run of the year to left-center field and Prosser knocked the first homer of his Carolina career, a three-run shot, over the left field wall to finish the scoring. Prosser was 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and he scored twice. The freshman second baseman has batted 8-for-15 over the last four games.
McCay was 1-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored on the day, extending his hitting streak to a career-high-tying eight games. The senior right-fielder leads the team with a .424 batting average in the young season. Adams and Greenberg, both freshmen, each finished the afternoon 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base. Greenberg has a team-leading five steals through 11 games.
The Tar Heels and Pirates return to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium. Sunday's series finale will start at 1:30 p.m.
