The University of North Carolina will retire Antawn Jamison's Number 33 jersey at halftime of Carolina's game against Georgia Tech on Wednesday, March 1. Jamison, currently on the injured list for the Golden State Warriors, was the unanimous 1998 National College Basketball Player of the Year.
Jamison will be the seventh Tar Heel men's basketball player honored by retirement of his jersey. The others include Jack Cobb, George Glamack (#20), Lennie Rosenbluth (#10), Phil Ford (#12), James Worthy (#52) and Michael Jordan (#23).
Jamison averaged 22.2 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in 1997-98 as he led the Tar Heels to a 34-4 record, Atlantic Coast Conference championship and Final Four appearance under first-year head coach Bill Guthridge. He is the only player in ACC history to be named to the All-ACC Team in his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons. As a junior, he scored 822 points (second in UNC history) and grabbed a Tar Heel-record 389 rebounds. He finished his career fourth alltime at UNC in rebounding with 1,027 and seventh in scoring with 1,974 points.
He was named National Player of the Year by The Associated Press, John Wooden Award, Naismith Award, National Association of Basketball Coaches, U.S. Basketball Writers Association, The Sporting News, CBS/Chevrolet, Basketball America, Basketball Times and Basketball News.
He also received the McKevlin Award as the ACC's Top Male Athlete (in all sports) and the Patterson Medal as Carolina's outstanding senior athlete (he was a senior in academic credits earned). Jamison received his undergraduate degree in African-American Studies in December 1999.
Jamison's teammate, Vince Carter, also will have his jersey honored at a later date. Scheduling conflicts have prevented the players from being honored earlier this year. Jamison is able to attend Wednesday's game as a result of season-ending knee surgery which he underwent last week.
Carter's ceremony will be held next year at a date to be determined.
