Baseball Opens Home Season In Style

Chapel Hill, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina baseball team defeated Elon 14-0 Wednesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium in its home opener to move to 4-0 on the season. The win was its 38th consecutive at Boshamer against a non-conference opponent. Ryan Snare gave up just two hits and struck out nine in seven scoreless innings for his first victory of the season. Scott Light (0-1) took the loss.
Dan Moylan broke open a 2-0 game in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-run home run to right field. Jay Madeira, who earned the start at first base, singled home Tyrell Godwin later in the inning and Matt McCay also scored to give Carolina the 6-0 advantage and a four-run fifth. Carolina's powerful lineup followed with four runs in each of the next two innings to put that game out of reach.
The sixth-inning scoring barrage was highlighted by back-to-back homers by Clay Hooper and Tyrell Godwin. Hooper smashed a three-run homer to left field and Godwin followed with his first home run of the season, a blast to right center.
Overall, the Heels produced 12 hits, half of them for extra bases, and got terrific production from its two, three, four hitters. Those batters, Moylan, Hooper and Godwin, combined to hit 7-for-11 and knock in 10 of Carolina's 14 runs. Moylan was 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored, Hooper was 3-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored, and Godwin was 2-for-3 with three RBI and the left fielder scored twice. Madeira finished with two hits and three stolen bases, while freshman center fielder Adam Greenberg continued an impressive start to his UNC career, scoring four times while getting a hit in his fourth straight game.
Derrick DePriest pitched a scoreless ninth inning in relief for his 92nd career appearance at Carolina, good for a third-place tie in the UNC record book.
The Tar Heels return to action this weekend with games Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (1:30 p.m.) versus Penn State at Boshamer Stadium.
