Carfley Earns Academic All-ACC Selection

University of North Carolina senior center Ryan Carfley was named to the 1999 Atlantic Coast Conference All-Academic Football Team, the league office announced Wednesday. The Bergen, N.J., native started all 11 games at center for the Tar Heels. He also earned a 3.35 grade point average in political science.
Carfley took over starting honors at center midway through the 1998 season and helped lead the Tar Heels to victory in the Las Vegas Bowl. He suffered torn cartilage in his knee in the first quarter of that contests, but returned to action later in the game as UNC beat San Diego State, 20-13.
"Ryan Carfley demonstrates all that is good about college athletics," says head coach Carl Torbush. "He has fought through injuries to remain on the field and be a great leader for our football team, especially in tough times. He is a man of character and displayed an outstanding work ethic both in the classroom and on the football field. I know he will be a success in his life in whatever career path he chooses. He is an excellent selection for this award."
